Please read about the teacup-storm being raised about Karnataka Government recommending the above book for use in libraries in Karnataka.
www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Mangalore/article3657113.ece When Sri Sri Rangapriya used the adjective Bharatiya to describe the habbaharidinagalu (term used only by Kannada Hindus to describe their festivals, others will not call them haridinas for any reason), he would not have known that the book will please the Karnataka Government and therefore draw the ire of social and political groups opposed to the Government. The controversy is because our constitution has named our country India that is Bharat, while the term Bharat had been in use long before part of the Bharat landmass acquired the name India and a large part of that India became the free Indian nation. This large part remained inclusive with respect to religions and therefore opted both to take the name Bharat and to be secular unlike the rest of the original Bharat after partition. Hindus in India have never felt bad about identifying with the Bharatiya description. There is a Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan too. Any Indian should be able to count on his/her fingers other Muslim organizations called Bharatiya. I could be mistaken on this notion. |
